I have some good news for you, in case you haven't heard: most heterosexual men are nowhere near as fashion-conscious as you are. The majority of us are, in fact, borderline fashion-unconscious. Our understanding of trends in women's wear generally falls somewhere between the anecdotal (what we see on magazine covers), the nonexistent (a woman makes a big impression on us but we can't remember what she wore), or the historic (think Princess Leia in Star Wars).

Why is this good news? If you want to impress a guy on a first date, your choices are way easier than you think. Instead of worrying about dressing too conservative, too revealing, too pop, too hipster, too professional, too young, too old, etc etc, pay attention to just one decision point. How do you think you look? If you think you look good, regardless of the stylistic statement you're making, then you'll probably make a great first impression. On the other hand, if you feel uncomfortable or uncertain about what you're wearing, then you are handicapping yourself and should probably change.

It's really that easy. You can take a risk, or go with an old standby; make a statement, or keep it conservative. In the end, as long as you feel confident and attractive in what you're wearing, that message will come across -- and be way more memorable for a guy than the actual clothes on your back.
